The closing of our first (and sucesfull) season renting out Mon Coeur means I can now move into Mon Coeur for the winter and move onto the interior of Ma Chaleur..
I’ll walk through the front door and explain as we go, seeing as we have no floor plan apart from whats in our heads
we won’t be converting upstairs as its not necessary for our intentions, its to be another 1 bed house all on one level so much more suitable to older guests.
through the front door into hallway, bathroom in front leading straight into garden, floor is again tile laid direct on top of soil so these will have to be lifted, soil dug, hardcore, membrane, insulation, concrete and then tile.
bedroom doorways to right half way down with a staircase to access attic on far right, these two rooms will have the dividing wall between them knocked down to create one large front too back bedroom with french doors direct into garden, front window staying as is, the wall you can see to right will pretty much stay where it is apart from a re-position slightly so it lines with flooring as you’ll see in a minute.
wall on left with doorway to kitchen, this wall will be completely removed to create an open plan lounge very much like little house.
doorway to the two bedrooms off hallway, you can see how its been moved at some time which has left oak and tiled floor half in half out, this we will try to change with position of new wall but depends what sizes we’re left with
bed 1, note suspended ceiling that is well and truly scarred from a freak un-predicted storm that happened when we had the roof off and no tarpaulin up that was a fun evening!
bed 2, similar scars except this is where we were sleeping, we both had concerns of it collapsing halfway through the night depositing god knows how many years worth of rodent crap on our heads, i think we escaped by the skin of our teeth, i’ll be interested to see whats up there when i rip it down
our make shift bathroom that was an open terrace when we moved in, it wasn’t meant to last two years but it did in fact the whole house has done us proud tbh, i’d never have thought something so grotty could feel such a home, we’re both a bit sad to see it change.
we are going to keep it as a bathroom but there will be significant changes no doorway to garden for a start and there will be oak beam structures inside to continue a traditional feel
toilet to left of bathroom, wall will come down & toilet relocated in a portion of the hall leaving a sizeable bathroom for all the usual luxuries
this is it from the outside, not the prettiest of things and not hard to improve on, should look somewhat different by the time beams and render have been added and a new canal tile roof
what was the kitchen (soon to be workshop) will be turned into the open plan living area with open fire log burner, we’re hoping there’s some nice stonework under all that Crepi on the chimney, again, the windows to the rear will be elongated into french doors for direct garden access
this will become the kitchen, ceiling is same asloung above, nice and lofty which leaves it feeling beautifully cool in the summer, it hit 40s again this year but this house needed no AC turning on, little house did.
windows to rear will again, you guessed it! be french doors leading onto decking
thats it before i start gutting it
and here i’ve started but removing the hall walls
then one of the bedroom walls down
The staircase, never noticed it while we were living there but its actually quite a nice little original oak jobbie, may well come in handy later on so I took it out with this in mind, threw the risers but kept all the steps, string and rails
that let me get to the second bedroom, more fibre ceiling panels down and removed the half paneling on walls
hole behind the paneling
I’m thinking old cupboard recess built into original wall, we’ll probably use this again but not consulted the oracle yet
something living here over the years had a mean appetite, this is a skull from a coypu, the bright orange teeth dont seem to fade with age! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coypu
removing the ceiling tiles has revealed some lovely beams
that it gutted, now for the hard bit of creating what we want…
